이번 주, 뉴욕 국제 사진 센터(ICP)에서 버틴스키의 경력을 아우르는 전시가 시작되었다. 'The Great Acceleration'이라는 제목의 이번 전시는 전 세계 자연 경관의 인간적 변형에 대한 사진작가의 조사를 드러낸다.

 

“이는 기술적 확장과 인간적 확장이 결합된 것입니다,”라고 버틴스키는 내셔널 지오그래픽에 말했다. “제 모든 작업은 이를 사진으로 표현하는 방법에 대한 명상입니다.”

 

ICP의 크리에이티브 디렉터 데이비드 캄파니가 기획한 이번 회고전은 버틴스키의 주요 이미지 중 일부를 포함한 70장의 사진과 세 개의 초고해상도 벽화를 선보인다. 또한 버틴스키의 창작 인생을 시각적 및 서사적으로 보여주는 타임라인도 포함된다. 이 전시는 2025년 9월 기후 주간 뉴욕시까지 이어질 예정이다.

전시 제목인 'The Great Acceleration'은 인구 증가, 수자원 사용, 교통, 온실가스 배출, 자원 채굴, 식량 생산 등 다양한 측정 기준에 따라 지구에 대한 인간의 영향이 급격히 증가하는 현상을 설명하는 데 사용되는 용어이다. 버틴스키는 지난 40년 동안 이러한 외적 징후를 길고 세밀하게 사진으로 담아왔다.

 

북미의 노천 광산에서 아제르바이잔의 유전, 중국의 계단식 논에서 나이지리아의 유전까지, 버틴스키는 자연 세계를 변형시킨 인간 활동의 옛 방식과 새로운 방식을 발견하기 위해 세계를 여행했다. 이미 버틴스키가 각 사진을 창조하는 데 사용하는 정밀함과 형식적 아름다움으로 통일된 'The Great Acceleration'은 각 프로젝트가 그 주제와 마찬가지로 근본적으로 상호 연결되어 있음을 더욱 강조한다.
